It’s particularly interesting how far some countries are diverging in terms of social media use, and surprising that Western Countries are actually lagging a fair way behind in adoption rates.

Some of the key takeaways from their Global Digital Report 2019 include:

  • The number of internet users worldwide in 2019 is 4.388 billion, up 9.1% year-on-year.
  • The number of social media users worldwide in 2019 is 3.484 billion, up 9% year-on-year.
  • The number of mobile phone users in 2019 is 5.112 billion, up 2% year-on-year.

However, the usage of social media type highly depends on the countries and age. There is a short report by WeAreSocial which illustrates that Facebook continues to dominate in terms of sheer numbers of active monthly users. The overall growth of the platform is healthy at 15.83% but in growth terms, it would certainly appear to be slowing. And Instagram continues to go from strength to strength with a healthy 33.33% growth in regular monthly users.
